Bohemian Gothic Tarot

THE PAGE OF CUPS

Lighter or more conventional meanings

Naive, but full of passion and goodwill * A young idealist, particularly when it comes to the arts - and to matters of love.

Darker, shadow or more hidden meanings

Enthusiasm cut short * An over-emotional young person, maybe a little hysterical * A reluctance to grow up and leave childhood dreams behind.

The most romantic and sentimental of all the Courts, the Page of Cups is, in the RWS cards, loveable, vulnerable, well-meaning and both artistically and emotionally sensitive. Not the most practical of people, he or she is nevertheless probably deeply engaged in learning and developing a creative endeavour. You occasionally want to shake such a person into being less idealistic and more hard-headed, but all the same, there is something touching about this kind of wide-eyed, innocent love of all things creative and beautiful.

In our card, the Page is a young girl. She looks hesitant and anxious, clutching a ridiculously tiny purse and dressed in an over-sized, "she'll grow into it" costume. She stands at the end of a flight of stone steps, unsure whether or not to go any further. Unbeknownst to her, the huge garden urn by her side looks at her with sceptical human eyes, probably wondering what she is going to decide to do.

This image emphasises the sensitive and anxious-to-please aspect of her character. There is also a palpable anxiety and she may well be on the verge of panic - we can imagine her turning and running back up those stairs. With its distinct Alice in Wonderland quality this picture can be read as showing someone who is clinging to the dreams, passions and imaginings of childhood, reluctant to step into the more mundane, less playful world of being an adult. When this card appears in a reading, look for someone who is both immature and a little too innocent for their own good. Though this is touching, it might make them vulnerable to being hurt very easily - there are times when you wish that this Page would grow up and face some of life's realities.

Some further ways to consider this card

Is the urn alive, or haunted - or are its living eyes merely in the child's imagination?
