Bohemian Gothic Tarot

SEVEN OF PENTACLES

Lighter or more conventional meanings

Reviewing what you've achieved * Taking time out to consider next steps * A time to contemplate and consider * Congratulating yourself on getting to a certain stage in your project, and deciding what to do next.

Darker, shadow or more hidden meanings

Looking at what you've done and wondering if the end justified the means * Making plans at other people's expense * Someone who has no regrets or sense of conscience * Building on the results of selfish and callous acts.

A time to pause and reflect on your achievements so far, particularly in the fields of business, finance or the development of skill. The Seven of Pentacles reminds us of the need to take some time out of work and consider both what you've already built up and how to develop it further. After the work and plans of the Ace, Two and Three, and the ups and downs of the Five and Six, when we arrive at this card everything stops for a while as we clear some space to ask ourselves, "What next?"

It's a neutral enough meaning in the conventional RWS card, but in our version it becomes much more disquieting, because the beautifully dressed young woman is gazing thoughtfully at a nicely arranged tower of human skulls and bones. Is it possible that these are her work? If so, how can this be? This card could imply that she is the "black widow" of urban legend, the woman who has worked her way through all too many rich and gullible husbands. She may well be an innocent, simply contemplating the "work" of time. There's no way of telling for sure. We look at her exquisite pearls and wonder how she came by them. Calm and contemplative, her expression gives away nothing.

This card particularly asks us to look honestly at whether or not our achievements have been built at the expense of others, and if we have in any way compromised our ethics. If so, this is a good time to stop this behaviour and change things for the better. After all, though the lovely woman in this image looks prosperous, we have to wonder if she is happy - is her conscience finally making itself heard?

Some further ways to consider this card

I've suggested in my discussion that the woman on this card is in some way responsible for the skulls and bones. But if we look at the card a different way and assume that these are simply something she has come across, then what could the story be?
