Each Lover can bring us a little closer to ourselves. For we are the true object of our own desires. We alone can reintegrate our far-flung experience into wholeness. We may elect to work on this reintegration by ourselves, or find a supportive partner or partners to work with us. On some level we are all lovers striving to reintegrate our souls through the meditation of a love relationship.

Love is complicated, so the Cosmic Tribe Tarot has three versions of the Lovers to choose from. Questions of responsibility, respect, and integrity affect every relationship regardless of the gender mix of the participants. In every situation love impregnates our hearts with the possibility of transcending our limited personal experience of the world.

In each of the cards a couple embraces tenderly. The Lovers are physically intimate but their gaze draws them inward. They see that relationship requires focusing on their own soul while supporting their partner in doing the same. The Lovers are ringed by fire and stand in water. These elements combine to form their unique natures. Fire is active, passionate, and consuming. It gets things done. Water is receptive, intuitive, and nurturing. It flows between realities. Each of the Lovers has many aspects to their personality such as introversion or extraversion. For each aspect, there is a watery quality and a fiery duality, with one usually being dominant. Often the Lovers complement each other in these areas. Their lives will mesh and they will effectively mirror that which the others psyche is in search of. But all will not be smooth sailing because fire is also the passion and growth the lovers explore together. Passionate sex and tender generosity combine with angry flare-ups and quiet withdrawals in the choreography of compromise and cooperation. Water. on the other hand, soothes the Lovers with shared feelings, but it can also drown them in seas of unresolved issues. Every move in their amorous dance of fire and water reveals what they each still need in order to find wholeness within themselves.

Above the Lovers, a happy cherub hovers. The cherub is the ancient symbol of the hand of fate in the unfolding of love. The invisible love potion sprinkled on them by the cherub causes the lovers to be attracted to one another and initiates them into the ongoing journeys of self integration. Around the pair, waves of love energy emanate as the potion takes effect, making the cherub smile. The open-hearted Lovers are gateways for the universe to express the ecstasy that comes from breaking down the walls of separation. Behind them their eyes have become cosmic eyes that see the perfection they seek. In this way love helps them venture beyond the incompleteness of their egos and into the realm of integration and fulfillment.
