Cosmic Tribe Tarot

SEVEN OF CUPS

Losing Control

The music is loud and randomly played. Is it blaring? The other people in the room are dressed scandalously and behaving very strangely. Are they certifiably insane? Somebody hands you a glass: the liquid oozes green, smokes and bubbles. Will you lose control? Will you go too far? What is everybody thinking of you? What would your parents say?! The head swims, your room swirls. Maybe you've had enough. Or have you?

In the card a wild party is going on. Lots of strange things are happening. Everybody is really loose and all kinds of craziness streams out of the cups of people's emotions. This party is wild in a bizarre fun-house sort of way. People don't seem to be themselves. And while they appear to be having fun, there is an intangible sense of desperation lurking behind the bright lights, outlandish outfits, and zany music. Look, there in the corner. Isn't that the cosmic eye? It's bloodshot! And a snake wriggles drunkenly out of the iris wearing a lotus whose supposedly sacred beam spins recklessly out of control. This is sacrilege! This is debauchery! Well, at the least, it is utter emotional chaos; but the question is whether it plays a useful role.

Divinatory Meaning

Should the Seven of' Cups crash your reading, ask yourself how you lose control. Sometimes losing control is what you need to do if you hang on to life too tightly. It could lead to feeling pleasure or some other valuable new experience. A party can be fun. Don't be judgmental. Just relax and enjoy it. But sometimes you might get stuck searching for more and more fun. When obsession rears its head, there is probably something in the emotional realm crying out for attention. The more we try to escape the feelings of boredom, sadness, loneliness, or anger, the weirder these parties become. And it's not just drinking and drugging we need to be aware of. Anything fun or thrilling has an addictive aspect to it. What was once a good time becomes increasingly desperate and shallow. The standard advice is moderation. But if despite the warnings, you sail gaily over the edge, be prepared to deal with a lot more than you were originally running from.
